10 Tips To Save Money On Food

If you looking to save money on your weekly food shopping then here are ten tips on how you could be saving money at your local supermarket.

1. BUY VALUE BRANDS

Value brands are brands, that offer pretty much the same product, for a lower price. A lot of times we can pay more than 50 % higher prices, just because we are buying a brand. Buying value brands, in most cases, doesn’t mean you are buying less quality food, as most of them have a very little difference in quality or none.

2. BUY FROZEN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Frozen fruits and vegetables are much cheaper than most of the fresh ones. For example, paying a high price for fresh berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and so forth can easily be replaced by a bag of frozen berries, that still keep all of the nutrients of the fresh fruit.

3. WRITING A SHOPPING LIST

Before going to the store, write a shopping list of the things you truly need. When coming to the store, try not to get carried away with snacks and things that aren’t on the list. Make sure you are not hungry when you are shopping because you might end up buying much more than expected.

4. EXPIRATION DATES

Don’t throw away foods that are expired only for a few days, unless they are moldy or smelling. Another way to save money on this type of food is, to buy the discounted food in the store that is nearing its expiration date.

5. COUPONS AND DISCOUNTS

Whenever you can, try to collect useful coupons and take advantage of good deals and discounts. Such as 2 for the price of one and so forth.

6. DO NOT BUY PLASTIC BAGS

Believe it or not, the price of plastic bags has increased over the years. Not only are they bad for the environment but they can be bad for your wallet too. Imagine spending 10 – 25 cents on a plastic bag every day and do the math.

7. CANNED FOOD

Canned food is usually very affordable and lasts for years without refrigeration. The only negative side is, it is not the healthiest option, so you shouldn’t eat it too often but it can save you some money when necessary.

8. FREEZE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE FROZEN

Do you have some strawberries that are going to go bad if you don’t eat them? Just freeze them. Maybe you forgot about a piece of chicken you bought 2 days ago or any other item, that can be frozen. Do yourself a favour and freeze it. It might just come in handy another day.

9. COOK MEALS THAT LAST FOR FEW DAYS

Cooking a delicious pot of Chili con Carne or a big pot of vegetable soup or stew. You decide. But in any case, you will have a meal that lasts for a few days.

10. SKIP RESTAURANTS AND COOK YOURSELF

When you cook your own food, you save money on ingredients. Why pay double or triple the money in a restaurant, when you can do it yourself and most of the time it`ll taste nicer as you`ll make it how you like it.
